American marten study comparing Apostle Island population to rest of state

RHINELANDER - The American Marten sits on the state's endangered species list. The weasel-like mammal likes forests here in northern Wisconsin, but it needed to be reintroduced to the area.

Scientists also introduced it on the Apostle Islands, and it might actually be doing better there.

DNR Furbearer Specialist John Olson says researchers are trying to find out how the marten has actually survived on the islands. That could give them ideas on how to keep the animal strong in the Northwoods.
