TOMAHAWK - Trees add significantly to the beauty of the Northwoods. But there's a disease that kills some of them off and spreads to others before most people can figure out what to do about it.
"Oak Wilt is a fatal disease on Red Oaks. It looks completely healthy in the spring and then sometime in June, July, August or September it loses 99 percent of its leaves within a month," says Brian Schwingle, a DNR forest insect and disease specialist.
That's exactly what happened to this tree off Highway 8 near Lake Nokomis. Schwingle says Oak Wilt is prominent in the area, as well as other parts of Vilas, Oneida and Lincoln Counties.
